We are called to leave a legacy in the city of Pensacola. This page will highlight the namesakes for each individual Scholarship fund and their stories! Annual scholarships will be awarded to a graduating senior in Escambia or Santa Rosa Counties through the application process below.
Arthur Thomas Houghton, Jr. was born on December 11, 1948 in
Montgomery, Alabama to Arthur Thomas Houghton, SR, and Pearl Mae Taylor. Arthur married Sheila Lynn Grammer on June 21, 1968. Two children were born, Taushi Kay Houghton and Patrick Thomas Houghton. Arthur's father passed away when Arthur was just five years old and he was raised by a single Mom.
Upon graduation from High School Arthur worked to raise funds for college by doing various odd jobs while attending school full time. He attended and graduated from Alexander City Junior College on June 7, 1969 earning an Associate in Science Degree. He went on to graduate from Auburn University on June 8, 1971, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration.
After college, Arthur joined the Alabama National Guard where he served four years. Arthur moved to Florida and started a job with Smith’s Bakery where he retired after 41 years.
He attended and loved Legacy Church where he taught Sunday School, served as an Elder and greeter, all while helping with any task that might be needed at the church.
Arthur passed away on July 31, 2020 of a Heart Attack while working out at the gym he so loved. His passion for helping young people is encapsulated in this scholarship. This was developed in his honor in order to help students that may need assistance with their education costs.
